Julia Peirone’s photo series Some Like It Hot was named one of Market Art Fair 2025’s best by Dagens Nyheter, for its intimate and thought-provoking portraits that explore femininity and identity through the lens of social media and self-presentation.

Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter named Julia Peirone’s work one of the standout contributions to the 2025 Market Art Fair.

For the photo series ‘Some like it hot’ (2022), Peirone was inspired by selfies posted on Instagram. She noticed similar poses and the same homogenous make-up looks were being posted on the app. Peirone asked girls to recreate the iconic look of Marilyn Monroe. Instead of looking in a mirror the girls looked straight into the artist’s camera. Captured in the intimate moments of ‘putting their face on‘, the girls consciously or unconsciously explore how classic signifiers of femininity – painted lips, long eyelashes – can be a mask to hide behind or to gain power through. The nontraditional portraits humanize the girls with their smeared lipstick and crooked eyelashes.
