Modern visual culture favours self-promotion and an obsession with abstract ideals of beauty. In her photography, Julia Peirone focuses on these notions to explore young, mostly female teenagers searching for identity. Often capturing the casting process, reshoots, fleeting moments, and ‘failures’ are given prominence. The images can hardly be defined as portraits in the traditional sense; rather they explore a mental state.
